Howard and Alabama A&M Set to Open 2026 HBCU Football Season at Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kickoff
ATLANTA, Ga. — The road to the 2026 HBCU football season officially began Thursday morning as conference officials, university representatives, coaches, band directors, student athletes, sponsors, and media gathered inside Center Parc Stadium for the 2026 Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kickoff Press Conference, celebrating one of Black college football's premier opening weekend traditions.
The annual Kick Off press conference officially announced this year's nationally televised showdown between the Howard University Bison of the Mid Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and the Alabama A&M University Bulldogs of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). The two programs will square off on Saturday, August 29, at Center Parc Stadium in Atlanta with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. The game will once again receive national exposure on ABC, with additional coverage across ESPN platforms, continuing the network's longstanding commitment to showcasing HBCU football on college football's opening weekend.
For more than two decades, the Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kickoff has served as much more than a football game. It has become a national celebration of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, bringing together championship football, elite marching bands, alumni, students, and fans from across the country in one of the college football landscapes most unique opening weekend experiences. 
Executive Director John Grant emphasized the event's continued growth and its role in elevating HBCU athletics on a national stage through partnerships with Cricket Wireless, Toyota, ESPN, and numerous corporate sponsors. Officials also highlighted the economic and cultural impact the event continues to have on the city of Atlanta while providing unprecedented visibility for HBCU student-athletes and institutions.
Howard enters the matchup looking to begin a new chapter under head coach Ted White, while Alabama A&M, led by second-year head coach Sam Shade, hopes to build momentum after an offseason focused on player development and program growth. Both programs view the nationally televised contest as an opportunity to make an early statement before conference play begins.

The 2026 MEAC/SWAC Challenge continues a longstanding rivalry between the MEAC and SWAC, conferences whose annual matchup has become one of the signature events on the HBCU football calendar.
