Alabama A&M pulls away from Miles College 38 - 23 in Louis Crews Classic

Alabama A&M gave the home crowd plenty to cheer about Saturday night, pulling away from Miles College for a 38–23 victory in the 16th Annual Louis Crews Classic at Louis Crews Stadium in Huntsville.

The Bulldogs came out aggressive from the opening kickoff and controlled most of the game behind a physical rushing attack that Miles never really found an answer for. Alabama A&M finished with 471 yards of total offense, including 273 yards on the ground, while improving its grip on the game with scoring drives throughout the first three quarters.

Troy Bruce was at the center of that success.

Bruce finished with 145 rushing yards and two touchdowns, consistently finding running lanes and giving the Golden Bears problems once he got into the second level. Cotton Nero added two rushing touchdowns of his own as Alabama A&M continued to lean on its ground game and wear Miles down.

Quarterback Cornelious “Quad” Brown also made his impact through the air, connecting with Jordan Chambers-Smith on a fade route for a touchdown as the Bulldogs showed they could hurt Miles in multiple ways offensively.

Alabama A&M jumped out to a 14–7 lead after the first quarter before adding another 10 points in the second to take a 24–7 advantage into halftime.

Miles continued to compete after the break, but every time the Golden Bears appeared to build momentum, Alabama A&M had an answer.

The Bulldogs added two more touchdowns in the third quarter, pushing the lead to 38–14 and putting themselves firmly in control heading into the fourth.

Miles quarterback Brinley Vandiver helped keep the Golden Bears alive with his ability to make plays on the ground, including a touchdown on an option run. Miles finished with 329 total yards and 21 first downs, but Alabama A&M’s offensive production proved to be too much to overcome.

Miles scored nine unanswered points in the fourth quarter to make the final score a little closer, but by that point the damage had already been done.

One of the more surprising parts of the game was just how many penalties both teams had to overcome. Miles was flagged 13 times for 119 yards, while Alabama A&M was called for 13 penalties totaling 111 yards.

Even with those mistakes, the Bulldogs were still able to move the football consistently, finishing with 28 first downs and nearly 150 more yards of offense than Miles.

The win came in front of 13,634 fans at Louis Crews Stadium and gave Alabama A&M a strong showing in its home opener.

For the Bulldogs, the biggest takeaway was the dominance of the rushing attack. Between Bruce and Nero, Alabama A&M showed it could control the game physically, create explosive plays on the ground and keep pressure off Brown in the passing game.

Final score: Alabama A&M 38, Miles College 23.
