Alabama State’s Passing Attack Overwhelms Miles College in 37-9 Home Victory
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Alabama State football delivered the performance it was expected to on Saturday, Sept. 13, routing Miles College 37-9 at ASU Stadium. Behind a near-flawless outing from quarterback Andrew Body, the Hornets improved to 2-1 on the season while keeping the Golden Bears winless at 0-3.
The final margin could have been even more lopsided. Alabama State was held scoreless in the third quarter as Miles dominated time of possession, but the Hornets’ explosive first-half passing attack provided more than enough cushion to secure the win.
Body Leads Hornets’ Air Raid
Quarterback Andrew Body was nearly perfect, completing 14 of 16 passes (88%) for 251 yards and four touchdowns while adding 60 rushing yards on just seven carries. His precision passing fueled a receiving corps that looks deeper and more dangerous each week.
“Andrew’s making the right reads, and our guys are executing,” head coach Eddie Robinson Jr. said. “We just have to keep that focus for all four quarters.”
Jones Headlines Deep Receiving Corps
Slot receiver Jalen Jones emerged as Body’s top target, racking up 118 yards and two scores on only four receptions. His 61-yard catch-and-run early in the second quarter showcased his speed and yards-after-catch ability, extending Alabama State’s lead to 17-3.
Wideout Ajai Harrell added a 40-yard touchdown on a short dump-off, while Dylan Djete hauled in a 15-yard back-shoulder score just before halftime to make it 31-3. By intermission, Body had thrown touchdowns to three different receivers.
Miles College Shows Fight but Can’t Keep Pace
Miles College found some rhythm after the break, using a 10-play drive capped by running back Roderick Thomas’ 2-yard touchdown run to trim the deficit to 31-9. The Golden Bears also managed a 47-yard field goal from Reid Grek early in the second quarter.
But sustaining drives wasn’t enough against Alabama State’s big-play offense. Defensive back Keane Lewis led the Hornets with eight tackles and a tackle for loss, helping limit Miles to short gains and forcing third-and-long situations.
Second-Half Slowdown Highlights Room for Growth
Alabama State’s lone points after halftime came on a 25-yard field goal from Andrew Abu-Akel with 10:02 left in the fourth quarter. Robinson Jr. said he wasn’t pleased with his team’s execution in the second half, emphasizing the need to finish drives as conference play ramps up.
“We know what we’re capable of,” Robinson said. “We’ve got Florida A&M next, and we can’t afford to take our foot off the gas.”
What’s Next
The Hornets travel to Tallahassee to face Florida A&M in Week 4, their first road conference matchup since the 30-7 win at Southern. With a balanced attack and a quarterback playing at an elite level, Alabama State looks primed to contend in the SWAC.
Miles College, still searching for its first win, will look to regroup and capitalize on the positives from Saturday’s second-half performance.
