Southern University Overpowers Grambling State 34-17 in 49th Annual Bayou Classic

NEW ORLEANS — The 49th Annual Bayou Classic lived up to its billing on Saturday afternoon, as Southern University stormed back from an early deficit to defeat rival Grambling State University 34-17 in front of a lively crowd at Caesars Superdome.

Slow Start, Strong Finish

Southern came out of the gates sluggish, allowing Grambling to seize a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. However, once the Jaguars found their rhythm, they dictated the tempo on both sides of the ball.

Quarterback Besean McCray was the engine of Southern’s offense, rushing for 93 yards and keeping the defense on its heels with his ability to extend plays. The Jaguars’ emphasis on ball security paid off, as they avoided turnovers while their defense forced three crucial fumbles from Grambling.

Defensive Pressure Breaks Grambling’s Rhythm

While Southern’s offense steadily gained momentum, the Jaguar defense made life miserable for the Tigers. Grambling’s offensive line struggled to hold its ground, surrendering seven sacks that killed drives and stalled momentum.

Despite the struggles, Floyd Chalk was a bright spot for Grambling. The running back powered his way to a season-high 120 rushing yards, showcasing grit and determination even as the Tigers fell behind.

Southern’s Statement Victory

The win pushes Southern’s record to 7-4 on the season and cements their position atop the SWAC West Division. With the Bayou Classic trophy secured, the Jaguars now shift their attention to an even bigger stage: a rematch against Jackson State in next week’s SWAC Championship Game.

Head Coach Eric Dooley praised his team’s resilience:

“We knew it was going to be a battle early, but I’m proud of how we responded. Our guys trusted the game plan, protected the football, and brought home a big win for Jaguar Nation.”

Grambling’s Season Comes to a Close

For Grambling, the loss drops their record to 4-8, closing the curtain on a challenging season. While the Tigers showed flashes of promise—particularly on the ground with Chalk’s breakout performance—the lack of offensive cohesion and protection up front proved costly.

Looking ahead, Head Coach Hue Jackson emphasized growth:

“We have to learn from this. The Bayou Classic is always a big moment, and we didn’t execute the way we needed to. But this group will use the offseason to regroup and come back stronger.”

Looking Ahead

The Jaguars’ victory not only adds another chapter to their Bayou Classic legacy but also sets the stage for a high-stakes showdown in the SWAC Championship. Southern will need another complete performance if they hope to take down Jackson State and capture the conference crown.

Meanwhile, Grambling enters the offseason with plenty of questions to answer, but also the potential to build on the pieces they showcased Saturday afternoon.
