Tennessee State Tigers Dominate Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils, 41-21
Nashville Tennessee, August 31, 2024 - In a commanding performance, the Tennessee State Tigers cruised to a 41-21 victory over the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils on Saturday, showcasing an explosive offense and a stifling defense that kept MVSU at bay for much of the game.
First Half
Tennessee State set the tone early, scoring on a 55-yard touchdown pass from Draylen Ellis to Jalal Dean after a methodical 6-play, 82-yard drive. The Tigers followed this up with stellar defensive work, forcing MVSU into multiple punts. Ellis remained sharp, completing passes on consecutive drives, keeping the Delta Devils’ defense on its heels. The Tigers extended their lead with a second touchdown drive covering 77 yards in just over two minutes. MVSU struggled to respond, punting again after gaining only three yards in three plays. Tennessee State capitalized on a Mississippi Valley State fumble to go up 21-0, as their defense took full control. They capped the half with a 32-yard field goal from James Lowery, pushing their lead to 24-0 by halftime.
Second Half
MVSU's offense found some rhythm in the third quarter, but not before Tennessee State made it 31-0 on a 50-yard drive. MVSU finally answered with a touchdown after a 13-play, 81-yard drive that took over six minutes. However, the Tigers immediately answered, as Ellis engineered a two-play, 75-yard drive culminating in a touchdown, extending the lead to 38-7. Despite the lopsided score, MVSU managed to put together two more touchdown drives in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to 41-21. However, it was too little, too late, as Tennessee State added a field goal and controlled possession to seal the victory.
Tigers’ Offensive Prowess
Draylen Ellis led the Tigers with 356 passing yards and three touchdowns. His favorite target, Jalal Dean, hauled in 9 catches for 144 yards and a touchdown, while Karate Brenson added 86 yards and a score. Tennessee State’s ground game also contributed, with Jaden McGill rushing for 41 yards, helping balance the attack.
MVSU’s Struggles
Mississippi Valley State quarterback Jaydyn Sisk completed 7 of 10 passes for 110 yards and one touchdown, but the Delta Devils' rushing attack sputtered, managing only 69 yards on 36 carries. Their offense only found traction late in the game, by which point Tennessee State’s lead was insurmountable.
