Alabama A&M succumbs to Jackson State in Gulf Coast Challenge, as a dominant 2nd Quarter by the Tigers set the tone in their 27-13 defeat of the Bulldogs.
In a hard-fought matchup, neither team gained much traction in the early stages. It was the Bulldogs who struck first, with sophomore kicker Victor Barbosa converting a 30-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
Jackson State responded quickly with a four-play, 44-yard drive culminating in a 20-yard touchdown catch by Travis Hunter, putting them up 7-3. A&M relied on their ground game, marching down the field on their next possession, and capping a 58-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run by Eaglin to take a 10-7 lead with 2:55 left in the first half.
Both teams struggled to make progress until the Tigers' offense came alive with four minutes remaining in the half. Starting at the A&M 33-yard line after a short punt, JSU's Shedeur Sanders connected with D.J. Stevens for a 19-yard touchdown pass, giving them a 14-10 lead at the 3:06 mark. JSU's momentum continued as they forced a fumble and quickly mounted another scoring drive, with Sanders finding Shane Hooks for a 35-yard touchdown strike just before halftime, extending their lead to 21-10.
In the third quarter, Jackson State continued their offensive dominance with a 10-play, 69-yard drive, highlighted by a 30-yard catch by Hooks and a 21-yard touchdown reception from Willie Gaines, increasing their lead to 27-10.
The Bulldogs managed to add a field goal by Barbosa in the fourth, narrowing the margin to a two-score game. They even had an opportunity to get closer after recovering a mishandled kickoff, but their efforts fell short, leading to a turnover.
Despite some late chances for both teams, the score remained unchanged, and Jackson State sealed the 27-13 victory.
